Home Heating Tips

Dust is an insulator. Vacuum the baseboards and convectors to help insure maximum heat efficiency.

Keep all drapes, curtains and furniture from blocking baseboard and/or convectors.

Use the sun. On sunny days, open your blinds and/or curtains and let the sun's heat in.

Make sure attic, basements and crawl-spaces are caulked and/or weatherstripped to prevent any heating loss.

Use door blockers at the bottom of drafty doors and plastic on drafty windows. Check doors and windows are closed tight to prevent heating loss.

"Bleed" the baseboard, convectors and radiators at the start of each heating season.

The lower you set your clock thermostat at night, the harder and longer and more oil it takes to get the temperature back up to the daytime settings.

Always make sure you have at least a 20-degree difference between your high and low water temperature settings. Be sure your high water temperature is set to at least 180 degrees.

Rooms over garages, and homes without a basement, are more difficult to heat. Insulate the ceiling and inside walls of the garage if possible.
